What is ProgramData folder in Windows?
So the ProgramData is a hidden folder, resides in the root drive, where Windows is installed. It’s location is usually C:\ProgramData
. According to Microsoft, ProgramData specifies the path to the program-data folder. This folder can be used by applications to store data for standard users, because it does not require elevated permissions. Here, it is important that you don’t get confused with another similar named folder i.e. Program Files. The Program Files folder may require elevated permissions to store data, which is not required by ProgramData folder.
When you install a program, it can you store its data to either of ProgramData or Program Files folder. This completely depends upon the program and you cannot change it. Apart from this, there are many system features, which may also write data to ProgramData folder.
Here are some facts you must know about ProgramData folder:
- It is safe system folder, so never consider it as mysterious folder
- It is highly recommended that you don’t modify contents of this folder
- The owner of this folder is SYSTEM
- Administrators group have full control on this folder, while standard user can only read & execute
- 3rd party programs, as well as Windows program and apps can write data to this folder
- Cached data from programs may also be saved in this folder
If you ever need to access ProgramData folder for troubleshooting purpose, you can locate it at C:\ProgramData
. If you can’t locate the folder, make sure you enable Hidden items.
