Previously, we have seen how to establish Remote Desktop Connection between Windows and iPad, Windows Phone, Mac and other Windows running system in this article. Today, while making Remote Desktop Connection between two Windows running system, we came around ‘The number of connections to this computer is limited‘ error, as result of which both system cannot be connected remotely.

Here’s the complete error message and screenshot:

The number of connections to this computer is limited and all connections are in use right now.
The number of connections to this computer is limited and all connections are in use right now. Try connecting later or contact your system administrator.

If you’re too facing this error, you need to find out how this issue can be solved. If your system is a part of domain, you need to ask domain controller to get support on this. And if you’re facing this problem on a isolated machine (non-domain system), you need to unplug the network cable from the machine. After unplugging cable, turn off WiFi and reboot the machine. After restarting the machine, plug the network cable, and turn on WiFi. In most of cases, this will solve the problem.

However, if the issue still persists, try following steps:

Fix: The number of connections to this computer is limited in Windows 11/10/8.1

🛈 Registry Disclaimer: Further steps will involve registry manipulation. Making mistakes while manipulating registry could affect your system adversely. So be careful while editing registry entries and create a System Restore point first.

1. Press W8K + R and type regedit in Run dialog box to open Registry Editor. Click OK.

2. In the left pane of Registry Editor, navigate here:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

FIX The Number Of Connections To This Computer Is Limited And All Connections Are In Use Right Now

3. Moving on, highlight the Internet Settings key and come to its right pane. Then right click in blank space and select New -> DWORD Value. Name the newly created DWORD (REG_DWORD) as MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server. Similarly create another registry DWORD and name it MaxConnectionsPerServer. Now, double click on anyone of them to get this:

FIX The Number Of Connections To This Computer Is Limited And All Connections Are In Use Right Now

4. Finally, in the Edit DWORD Value box, select Decimal as Base and put the Value data equals to 10 (which is equivalent to a in Hexadecimal Base). Click OK. Similarly, change the Value data for another DWORD and put same value for it as well. Now close Registry Editor.

Reboot the machine, and after restarting your system, you’ll find that the problem no longer exists.

Hmmm…that’s REALLY odd. That registry setting determines how many concurrent HTTP downloads you can do in IE.

^^ Agreed Jeff. But it seems to be only workaround that has solved this problem for many users :)

Microsoft must have closed this backdoor option. It does not work for me for OS Microsoft Windows 10 Pro, Version 10.0.18362 Build 18362. Any new ideas or options?

^^ Will research and update it here.

The “unplug the Network cable” fix is only temporary, and not an option if your remote.
The registry fix did not work.
Windows 10 Pro with latest updates.
    Still looking for solution.

Also try this solution, it helped me:
    + Start – gpedit.msc – Computer Configuration – Administrative Templates – Windows Components

    – Remote Desktop Services – Remote Desktop Session Host – Connections

    – Double-click “Restrict Remote Desktop Services users to a single Remote Desktop Services session” : Disable

    Hi Everybody,

After a windows update and some reboots, my remote desktop connection stopped working as it used to. I am getting this error so many ppl are getting but non of the “normal” solutions work for me. I can still log in to all of my users manually but not via RDP.

I’m using RDP connections to connect to different users on my win10 laptop on which I’m running multiply clients of the same game (Diablo 2 R). This way I’m able to run the game and different accounts at the same time and remotely control the other users without having to switch users all the time. I’m not connected to any server or anything just to my own users to be able to control different game clients.

I tried the registry methods (created MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server/MaxConnectionsPerServer DWORD), the disconnect LAN cable method, I checked my Taskmanager for connected users and I also went into gpedit.msc settings and disabled the limitation, but nothing has helped so far.

Is there a way to manually disconnect all the connections? I mean I know that I’m not logged in on to the other users since I logged into them end manually logged out of the “users” but when using the remote desktop I still get this error bluescreen telling me that “the number of connections to this computer is limited”,

Isn’t there an option to disconnect this ongoing connection?

Some other details that could perhaps help

    User 1 – Main user
    User 2 – Second user – 127.0.0.2
    User 3 – Third user – 127.0.0.3

All users use different windows accounts with different emails.

This laptop is new and I really don’t wanna reinstall windows because of that issue. I would really appreciate any help with this topic.

Thanks for reading and your time.

    Cheers

Rebooted my laptop Dell (old) with Shiftkey and then Reboot. Then I could roll back to an older restore point (2 months back) and then was able to login. With the most recent restore point it did not work. Now I have to update again and hope it will not lead to the same problem. In any case I will edit the Registry. Any further help would be appreciated. This is the first time this happens and only on one out of 4 laptops!

    1. Safemode the Windows10
    2. netsh int ip reset
    3. remove the IP save and Change to New IP.
    4. Restart.
