Features removed in Windows 11 Version 24H2
1. Paint 3D
Paint 3D was developed as a replacement for the classic Paint app, but due to its lack of success, Microsoft has stopped releasing updates and permanently removed the app from the Microsoft Store. However, users who already have the app installed on their computers can continue to use it.
2. Steps Recorder (psr.exe)
Microsoft has announced that Steps Recorder is slated for removal in future updates and recommends using the Snipping Tool app as an alternative for screen recording and sharing needs.
3. Driver Verifier GUI (verifiergui.exe)
Driver Verifier is a built-in Windows diagnostic tool designed to test and detect corrupt or incompatible drivers by putting them under stress. It is a useful tool that helps troubleshoot BSODs, system crashes, and instability caused by driver issues. The GUI version of the tool is now deprecated, however, you can access the console app (verfier.exe).
4. WordPad
WordPad, a legacy tool that has been part of Windows since 1995, has been removed from Windows 11 version 24H2 and Windows Server 2025. Microsoft recommends using Microsoft Word for RTF files and Notepad for plain text files.
5. DirectAccess
DirectAccess, a VPN feature that automatically connects users before they sign in, is now being replaced by Always On VPN which offers more flexibility, better security options, and compatibility.
6. TLS
TLS server authentication certificates using RSA keys shorter than 2048 bits are being phased out in Windows 24H2. Going forward, Windows will only accept RSA certificates with key lengths of 2048 bits or greater as valid.
7. 32-bit ARM Apps Support
Windows 11 24H2 no longer supports 32-bit ARM apps. Microsoft has greatly enhanced the x86 app-emulation performance and modern ARM devices are 64-bit.
8. NPLogonNotify and NPPasswordChangeNotify APIs
For security reasons, Microsoft has disabled the feature that sends passwords in MPR notifications through Group Policy for the NPLogonNotify and NPPasswordChangeNotify APIs. These APIs may be removed entirely in future updates. This will improve security and protect users’ passwords from potential theft by attackers.
9. WMIC
Starting with Windows 11 24H2, Microsoft has also disabled the Windows Management Instrumentation command-line tool, wmic.exe, by default. Microsoft recommends using Windows PowerShell for WMI tasks to enhance security and productivity.
10. Mixed Reality
Windows Mixed Reality is a failure. As a result, Microsoft is scraping all of the Mixed Reality in Windows 11 version 24H2, including the Mixed Reality Portal app, Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR, and SteamVR Beta. However, the existing Mixed Reality devices will continue to work with SteamVR on Windows 11, version 23H2, until November 2026. After that, Windows Mixed Reality will no longer be supported.
11. The Tips app
The Microsoft Tips app is a default tutorial hub that offers information about using Windows features. It is being removed from the latest Windows version and its content is no longer updated.
12. Adobe Type1 fonts
Adobe has ended all support for its PostScript Type 1 fonts in January 2023. As a result, Windows has also ended support for them. Apps using Type1 fonts on new Windows 11 version might not display content correctly.
13. Test Base
Microsoft is also discontinuing its Azure service called Test Base for Microsoft 365, which was used for data-driven application testing.
14. NTLM
NTLM (New Technology LAN Manager) is a legacy security protocol used for network authentication purposes. It has been part of Windows environments since Windows NT. All versions of NTLM, including LANMAN, NTLMv1, and NTLMv2, are now being phased out, although they will continue to work for the foreseeable future.
That’s all the features removed from Windows 11 24H2.
