Legacy Microsoft Edge will be removed in Windows 10 with April 2021 updates

Last year, Microsoft announced that legacy Microsoft Edge browser will be removed from Windows 10. It is to be replaced with new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge. The recently released Windows 10 Version 20H2 was shipped with new Microsoft Edge. Now Microsoft has announced exact dates to remove legacy Edge browser from previous Windows 10 versions. The legacy Edge support ends on 9 March, 2021. The company has announced that legacy Microsoft Edge will be removed in Windows 10 April 2021 updates. The updates released on April 13, 2021 will automatically replace legacy Microsoft Edge with new one.

Legacy Microsoft Edge came to Windows 10 in year 2015. To improve the performance of this browser, Microsoft switched to Chromium open-source project. The new Microsoft Edge uses the same Chromium engine that is used by Google Chrome. However, recently Microsoft has taken this browser to new levels and it is now much improved in performance, stability. This new Edge browser is can also work on previous Windows editions such as Windows 7, 8.1.

Legacy Microsoft Edge will be removed in Windows 10 with April 2021 updates

So if you’re on any of the following Windows 10 versions, legacy Edge browser will be replaced for you by Windows Updates released in April 2021. Note that Microsoft will also release an optional update in March, and that can also remove legacy Edge if you install it. However, if you skip March updates, the browser will be finally removed with April updates.

• Windows 10, version 1809, all editions (October 2018)
• Windows 10, version 1903, all editions (May 2019)
• Windows 10, version 1909, all editions (October 2019)
• Windows 10, version 2004, all editions (May 2020)
• Windows 10, version 20H2, all editions (October 2020)

As the legacy Edge support ends on 9 March, 2021, it is recommended that you should install Chromium-based Microsoft Edge before that. If you’ve already moved to Chromium-based Microsoft Edge, you’ll have no effect on your browser with March or April 2021 updates. Those updates will not reinstall the new Microsoft Edge for you.
